Fue fundada en 1920 por Sosthenes y Hernand Behn como una
sociedad de cartera de sus compañías de teléfonos y telégrafos en el Caribe. Se expandió al mercado europeo y se transformó en un importante fabricante en el ámbito de las telecomunicaciones. En las décadas de 1960 y 1970, ITT se transformó en un conglomerado al adquirir empresas como Sheraton Corp. y Hartford Fire Insurance Co. En 1987 liquidó sus negocios de telecomunicaciones y en 1995 se dividió en tres compañías: ITT Hartford Group Inc. (seguros), ITT Industries Inc. (dispositivos electrónicos de defensa y repuestos de automóviles), y una "nueva ITT Corp. que se fusionó con Starwood Lodgings en 1997.
